How to Replace a Headlight Bulb in a Toyota Corolla

If you realize the headlamp bulb in your Toyota Corolla has burnt out, you can replace it yourself. This job doesn't require any special tools, but you'll need to get the appropriate replacement bulb before starting. These instructions don't apply to models made before 2001.

things you'll need:

• #9006 and #9005 replacement bulbs (low- and high-beam bulbs)
• Flathead screwdriver

     Shut the Corolla's engine off and engage the emergency brake for added safety. Also, make sure its headlights are switched off.

     Open the hood using the primary and auxiliary hood release latches.

   • 3

     Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the clip from the top of the air cleaner duct and pull the duct out of the engine compartment (only when changing the passenger-side headlight.)

     Turn the headlight bulb socket counterclockwise to remove it from the assembly.

     Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the bulb. Carefully dispose of the bulb to prevent it from shattering or cracking.

     Attach the electrical connector to the new bulb and insert it into the headlight assembly. Twist it clockwise to secure its position.

     Test the new headlight to make sure it works before replacing the air cleaner duct (if applicable) and closing the hood.

Tips & Warnings

• Check the diagram in Section 7-3 of your Corolla Owner's Manual if you don't know which beam bulb to replace.

• Be careful not to scratch or smudge the new bulb's lens.
