How to Disable a 2002 Toyota Corolla Daytime Running Light

Daytime running lights are a safety feature designed for automobiles that are mostly driven in areas that experience a lot of rain or snowfall. As a result, some people who live in sunnier climates feel that they do not need this additional feature. Drivers have found that disabling their daytime running lights will extend the life of the bulbs and the lamps that house them. Here's how to disable the daytime running lights on your 2002 Toyota Corolla.

• Wire cutters
• Electrical tape

     Lift the hood and disconnect the negative (black) cable from the battery.

     Open the glove compartment and slide off the small plastic arm that is connected to the glove compartment door.

     Push in the sides of the glove compartment door and pull down to remove it.

   • 4

     Locate the DRL relay inside the glove compartment opening. It is the plastic cube with several wires connected to it.

     Detach the connector from the relay. Do this by squeezing the small tabs on the relay while simultaneously pulling on the connector.

     Cut the wire in pin 23.

   • 7

     Cover the ends of the wire with tape, and then tape the wire back together.

     Reattach the connector to the relay, and replace the glove compartment door.

   • 9

     Reconnect the car battery.

Tips & Warnings

• Leave about three inches of wire between the connector and where you make the cut, in case you ever decide to reactivate the daytime running lights.

• In some areas it is illegal to disconnect these lights; check your local laws before you make this modification.
